The remake industry

Hello! Welcome to my third blog. I wanted to share an article by Cosmopolitan magazine and give you my opinion on the subject matter.

Brief summary of the essay

In the source, the author writes that remakes have taken over the movie industry in the last decade. What seemed to be a wholesome take on nostalgia then is now hated by many people. Remakes are re-packaged, re-modelled, and re-marketed versions of a beloved movie. Although, remaking a pre-existing movie is not new. The movie industry works like a cycle Therefore, remakes are more prominent at a certain point in history. Even if people don't seem to like reboots, the movie industry is still making them because they are a safe bet. They can target a pre-existing audience and profit off their nostalgia. For Disney, reboots are a logical financial choice because they don't have to buy intellectual property rights. During the pandemic, movie studios could use remakes to secure profit. This money can then be used to finance more risky projects.

My point of view

In my opinion, there are too many remakes right now. I feel like movie studios choose easiness over creative efforts. There is a lack of diversity and surprise in mainstream cinema. Watching the new Top Gun movie, you know what to expect. Often, the visuals are pretty, and the film-making is smooth, but the movie is not memorable. A reboot can be enjoyable, but it remains a copy of its anterior version. I think Marvel movies are a great example of the industry right now. They offer new stories, but the movies are still related to the others. This massive sequel chain creates a sturdy and loyal fan base. Even if the movie is terrible, people will still watch it because of spoiler culture and their attachment to the characters. I am not a fan of the newer Marvel movies, but they are undoubtedly profitable. I understand why movie studios make those remakes, but they don't seem to use this money to make a lot of audacious movies.

Question : Which Netflix show became a cultural phenomenon, and how long did it take for it to be picked out by a studio?
